2037: Regional WA Transformed

With renowned demographer Bernard Salt

Partnered Events - 16 Mar 2012

The Institute in conjunction with the Department of Regional Development and Lands was delighted to have secured renowned demographer, KPMG Partner and best-selling author, Bernard Salt.

Today's sold out event at Pan Pacific Perth included members of industry, the community sector and government, all with an interest in regional development. Participants were treated to an inside look at the future of our state and the challenges it will face with WA's booming population.

Bernard set the scene of his presentation with statistics from Census supporting the need to develop regional WA with more than 100,000 people to be living in this area over the next 25 years with a total 2.8million in WA by 2021. Some of the key challenges he identified for the state is a new FIFO culture, decline in agriculture, the “risk of an unskilled and unemployable workforce” and the continued growth in mining.

Department of Regional Development and Lands Director General, Paul Rosair followed Bernard’s presentation describing current programs and initiatives in place to support regional development in WA. He commented “lifestyle and amenities are critically important for family” and the need for people feel to connected in their town.

The world’s impending food shortage means WA is also in a position to support agriculture with its “large amount of divertible water” and support from government initiatives set to help make it the next major sector.

Facilitated by Bernard Salt, a panel of leaders from government and industry participated in a hypothetical case study touching on ‘what-if’ scenarios of a natural disaster, terrorist attack, community discontent and the success and failure of strategic frameworks.
