Insights From An Intern

IPAA WA's recent Marketing Intern, Yohan Fernando shares his personal experience of undertaking a three month internship and the benefits toward career development.

I completed my degree in Business Commerce and majored in Marketing but found it a very competitive industry to get into. I was getting frustrated trying to get my first break as most employers required a level of experience, even for entry level positions.

I was forwarded an edition of IPAA WA’s iNews which advertised the opportunity for an internship at IPAA WA and thought it would be a good opportunity to gain relevant industry experience and network with people within the public sector.

On top of this, I hoped to gain real on-the-job knowledge of the marketing process and an exposure to an office environment, both of which were highly regarded in many graduate job applications.

My internship was for three months and my main responsibilities included organising email campaigns, updating website content, assisting with preparation of promotional material and supporting team at events. My overall experience during the IPAA WA internship was fantastic; it made me feel more confident that I had chosen the right career path in marketing.

Some of the highlights included getting the opportunity to look after the marketing of training and events whilst the Marketing & Communications Officer was on leave for 4 weeks, working in a close knit yet highly experienced team and the sense of accomplishment gained from a successful email campaign.

I would highly recommend students/graduates undertake an internship as I found that when it comes to the job hunt, so many employers look favourably on applicants with relevant experience. Aside from gaining experience, there are so many other benefits you will gain from an internship that will boost your career prospects now and in the future.
