Innovation Key To Better Public Service

The WA Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAAWA) is pleased to be hosting a morning seminar with world renowned Danish innovator and author Christian Bason who will be visiting Perth from 5-8 November as part of the Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) Visiting Specialist Program.

Christian presented at IPAA’s International Congress in Melbourne last month via video link on redesigning public administration.

“A more fundamental challenge is a lack of empathy – in many ways our public administration has become increasingly bureaucratic. I believe we have lost track of why we are here, and the difference that public services is trying to make in people’s lives,” Mr Bason said.

“Government exists to create better outcomes. We also have to do it in a productive way and to improve on the service experience.”

Following the publication of Christian's book ‘Leading public sector innovation: Co-creating for a better society’, he has been in constant demand across Europe and North America over the past two years. Since 2007 he has been the Director of MindLab, a cross-ministerial unit for citizen-centred innovation in Denmark. MindLab is an integral part of the ministries of Business and Growth, Employment and Taxation. The organisation leverages design and ethnography to drive innovation in public policies and services.

Christian is passionate about transforming the public sector’s ability to meet the needs of citizens and society. He is the author of four books and numerous articles on innovation, leadership and management. He is a frequent guest speaker in Denmark and abroad, and writes regular columns, blogs and articles about innovation and leadership. He is currently conducting a Ph.D. on design thinking as an approach to leading innovation in government.
