Federal Government Defers $2000 Self-Education Salary Cap Until 2015

The WA Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA WA) welcomes the Federal Government’s announcement to defer its decision to cap deductions on self-education expenses at $2000 until 1 July 2015.

The Government’s Economic Statement released on the 2nd of August 2013 deferred the cap to “allow for further consultation on how best to target excessive claims while ensuring the impact on university enrolments and genuine continuing professional development is minimised. This measure is expected to decrease receipts by $250 million over the forward estimates period.”

Institute Chief Executive, Mr Gavin Lewis said the cap would affect the development needs of its members, both regionally and locally.

“The Institute provides professional and relevant training for members from across the public sector in Western Australia and for individuals who pay for their own development and also travel from regional areas like the Pilbara, the cap will affect members from pursuing this development.”

“The tight financial situation for government agencies have meant that many public sector employees are opting to pay for their own development. If this cap goes ahead, then this will adversely affect their ability to achieve this development,” Mr Lewis said.
