Keynote Speaker
John Carey MLA
Parliamentary Secretary; Member for Perth
John was elected as the Member for Perth in March 2017 and subsequently appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier.
Prior to his election, John served as the Mayor of the City of Vincent from 2013 and as a Councillor from 2011.
During this time, he championed renewal of the city’s major retail and cafe precincts – investing to create more attractive, green and people friendly town centres and abolishing alfresco fees and red tape for cafes and small business.
He was also a leader for establishing new accountability and transparency measures and lifting standards for local government, driving new reforms which are now being adopted across the sector.
As the Member for Perth, John is committed to supporting small businesses, cutting red tape and championing the diversification of the economy – to unlock the full potential of our city and create more job opportunities locally. John strongly supports reinvigorating the State’s tourism strategy.
John previously worked as a parliament adviser to Labor Premiers Geoff Gallop and Alan Carpenter. He also worked for five years as the Director of the Kimberley Conservation Project for Pew Charitable Trusts, establishing and advocating for the Great Kimberley Marine Park.
