In October we offered an opportunity to hear from an incredible panel (see below) about the WA Public Sector Leadership Framework and a case study in its application.
We welcomed the Public Sector Commissioner, Sharyn O’Neill, to the session to the discuss leadership capability development and how it has been matched to the recruitment process for the refreshed Investment and Trade network run by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Industry.
This session enhanced delegates’ understanding of where and how they can link their experience to the framework as they advance their career.
The immediate benefit, to existing and future organisations this session provided was that delegates would return to work with a renewed and refreshed focus on performing to their highest level as they pursue wider or higher levels of responsibility.
Appointments to the Investment and Trade Commissioner positions are made under a secondment model within the Western Australian public sector and require successful candidates to demonstrate capabilities such as strategic policy experience, the ability to build productive relationships, good communication skills, stakeholder engagement expertise and effective leadership skills.
These critical skills overlap with the Western Australian Public Sector leadership capability areas of:
- shapes and manages strategy
- achieves results
- builds productive relationships
- exemplifies personal integrity and self-awareness
- communicates and influences effectively.
Serving in an overseas trade office is one of many exciting leadership and career opportunities available to WA public service professionals.
The session also brought together a panel of speakers lead by Rebecca Brown, Director General of the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, the recently appointed Agent General, John Langoulant AO, and four Investment and Trade Commissioners.
